About Dave

Dave retired from Weyerhaeuser in 2009 after almost 30 years of service.

Dave began his Weyerhaeuser Career in November of 1979 when he joined the Canadian Lumber Business at their corporate offices in Kamloops, BC. Taking a new position as regional Process Technician, Dave supported 6 sawmills by providing technical consulting and training to the management and maintenance associates. The microprocessor had just been invented, and with it major changes were occurring in all industries, especially the wood products industry.

During his three years at Kamloops, Dave designed and managed the design and integration of several lumber sorting systems, an advanced edger optimizer system and an advanced trimmer optimizer system.

In 1983, Dave was presented with an opportunity at Weyerhaeuser's Okanagan Falls Sawmill. Here he continued to explore process control solutions but also learned the challenges of managing a maintenance department and the issues involved in direct supervision. Notable achievements during his twelve years at OK Falls were the design and management of several major process improvement projects including lumber sorting systems, log sorting systems, lumber packaging systems and board edger optimizing systems. He also introduced Ethernet networks to support a Maximo Maintenance Management System. Once the MMS was stable, Dave introduced the WonderWare Human Machine Interface (HMI) system and created a system for the production supervisors which provided a real time overview of mill status.

Recognizing Dave’s abilities, Weyerhaeuser presented with an opportunity to manage the implementation of CIM/21 at their Grande Prairie, AB Pulp Mill in 1984. He moved his family to the great white north, to manage the Process Information Team which executed the project. Once CIM/21, a manufacturing process historian, was installed, he managed the installation of the Weyerhaeuser Incident Tracking System for the site.

In 1979, Dave joined Weyerhaeuser's Corporate Manufacturing IT (MIT) team in Federal Way, WA. His first assignment was to manage the MIT Lab. His team was responsible for maintaining the environment in which applications destined for the manufacturing floor, such as CIM/21 could be tested and enhanced. The first SAP test environment was purchased and installed in the MIT Lab during this time, and Dave managed the lab during the Y2K reliability assurance project.

The MIT Lab was absorbed into the greater IT Lab shortly after the Y2K project was completed, and Dave moved on to support projects implementing manufacturing systems at various facilities in Weyerhaeuser.  Notable projects included the PCM project which was a product tracking system for the Container Board Packaging, Recycling Division. The Canadian Lumber Inventory Management Project where Dave developed the Requirements Definition Document on which the product was built. Dave was the application lead for site inventories for the Lumber Track Sales and Inventory System Project, seeing it deployed to the Canadian Lumber, Western Lumber, Southern Lumber and Northwest Hardwoods divisions in Weyerhaeuser.

As Lumber Track was being rolled out, Dave became leader of the team tasked with supporting the product labeling systems and mobile terminals deployed at over 100 sites. With a team of 5 associates and interns, Dave developed the support processes and procedures which enabled the size of the group to shrink ultimately to two part time associates.

Because of his experience with wireless terminals and barcode technology, Dave was asked to work with the Enterprise Business Solution (EBS) Project as a technical manager. In this role, Dave was responsible for the deployment of the mobile and handheld terminals being deployed along with SAP in the iLevel Business Unit at Weyerhaeuser. This project involved working with the SAP support team to ensure the infrastructure required to support the SAP implementation was properly installed at each site.

Dave has grown with the computer revolution and is very knowledgeable of manufacturing and business processes.  An experienced hand at the implementation of barcode technologies and the wireless infrastructure required to support it, Dave enjoys opportunities that are challenging and lead to improved business performance.
